Spring Equinox - Celebrating the Seasons

John Sovec

Spring EquinoxTalk about feeling the effects of the spring equinox; I woke up Thursday morning and there was no choice but to clean my house. It was as if someone had set off an air raid siren and cleansing was the only action available to ease off the rush of energy flowing through me. I got a lot done that morning in a very short amount of time and it felt good to relinquish the rubbish that had accumulated in my space.

So what is an equinox? The word equinox actually means “equal night”; so the length of the day is equal to the length of the night, a unique event occurring only twice a year to mark the beginning of Spring and the end of Summer. For many ancient calendars it also marks the beginning of the New Year. (more…)

Yoga Remedy for the Flu

Paloma Chavez

fluremedy.jpgThis last week I too became a part of the national statistics on people who contracted the flu. And although I like to think that I keep myself somewhat healthy throughout the year and I rarely ever get sick, I just wasn’t getting out of it so easily.

I spent days and nights with holistic remedies to bring down a fever, relieve head and body aches and to clear up chest congestion. But I was also wanting to approach it with my yoga practice. Fortunately I remembered this article in Yoga Journal called 7 Poses to Relieve Cold & Flu Symptoms. (more…)

New Year, New Habit

Paloma Chavez

newyearresolution.jpgIt is not just about showing up on the mat; it is about how you work with your mind and the experience. – Cyndi Lee

So have you done it to yourself again, started the year with a lengthy list of “resolutions” for the New Year? Well you are not alone or uncommon. It is our human instinct to want to seek change and growth and to try to achieve them all in one year.

We desire success and fear failure, so often times we can be our own obstacles to achieving our goals. Even in our approach to an ongoing yoga practice, there can be nagging thoughts that hinder us from being fully present, fully open to the practice. (more…)

A Dedication Apart

Paloma Chavez

buddha1.jpgEach of us has a reason for practicing yoga. Whether for physical or spiritual goals, we may not imagine that it is what it is actually saving our lives. However for many people who are challenged with a chronic illness that may very well be their answer.

Yoga Behind the Wheel

Paloma Chavez

yoga in car.jpgSo if you are driving along the highway and you happen to see a person in the next slow moving vehicle bobbing and circling his head in a figure eight, then you might have come across the unique idea in yoga – Drivetime Yoga.

It might seem a bit crazy or enlightening. Consider the number of people furiously running the road trying to cut another two minutes off of their drivetime, while only saving 30 seconds. Now that is crazy! (more…)

Slow Down, You Move Too Fast!

Margaret “Saraswati”

Summer insists languidness (as in “lacking quickness of movement”), which may be cause for concern for many of us multi-fast-track accelerating to the finish line types. Especially being an independent with a laptop! Not getting official time-off, I have to remind myself to take a whole day off every once in a while. Having out of town guests helps, as it gives me more incentive to explore some off the freeway place with an intriguing name - like Bodega Bay. (more…)
