Traveling Back in Time

Christina Souza Ma

My mother and I are traveling along the Amalfi coast, taking in its breathtaking beauty. So much history in this area of Napoli (Naples).

Never in my life have I had to do so much translating for my mother. Not only is she hard of hearing but when English is a second language, that surely does not help matters.

We’re travelling by coach along such a long, winding road. Supposedly, this road is in the Guinness Book of Records for having the most bends (over a 1,000) over a short distance. How have communities lived in this area, which is built right up against the rocks? There are beautiful villages and small towns – not many but enough for me to grasp an essence of time.

Of course, in Napoli there is the great Mount Vesuvius that covers the renowned Pompeii and Herculaneum. Although we were only able to tour through a small part of Pompeii, it was amazing to see the structures of this old Roman city, the brilliance of its architecture and planning, and especially the molds of the people who died on the infamous morning that the volcanic ash covered the city. The details of what remained is amazing. Equally amazing is that we have not come far from what once was.

It felt so wonderful to do a Tree pose amongst the pillars in the middle of what was once the city center. It just felt so right to stand tall in honor of those who came before us.
