Wii Yoga?

wiifit.jpgDo you Wii? A recent announcement from the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, noted that yoga will be one of the fitness related options of their new Wii Fit product. Due out in May 2008, the product is a “pressure –sensitive” balance board that will already include this new program. (more…)

Billions Spent on Yoga

yamerica.jpgThis week Yoga Journal, one of the nations most respected yoga magazines, released a report “Yoga in America.” One of the most surprising findings was that Americans spend ”$5.7 billion a year on yoga classes, and products, including equipment, clothing, vacations and media.” (more…)

Yoga in Ghana

krisha1.27.jpgThe International Association of Black Yoga Teachers is a membership based organization that provides access to the practice of yoga with a pointed interest in serving the  African Diaspora as well as other communities. In recent years their dedication has taken them to supporting the efforts of local yoga practioners in Ghana.

In Spring 2008 the organization, lead by Krishna Kaur will be returning to Ghana to work with the men and women who are committed to becoming yoga teachers for their communities.  (more…)

Rewards for a Hero

mattteach.jpgA few months ago we brought you the story of Matt Sanford, who at the age of 13 was paralyzed from a car accident.  In his struggle to improve his mobility and decrease his chronic physical suffering, he began to take Iyengar yoga classes.  From this his life opened up before him and he is now one of the most sought after teachers of adaptive yoga. His unique efforts and unselfish acts have resulted in his nomination for a Volvo for Life Award. (more…)

World Yoga Day

Regulating Yoga Teachers

gymyoga.jpgI have often wondered if the yoga instructors at my local gym have the qualifications to teach yoga? And when I came across this article in the Brisbane Times, “Gyms to regulate yoga” it caused me to think twice about my own gym.

Although the instructors at my current gym seem open, gentle and confident, I must admit that I have not asked them directly of their previous experience. Most times I run into the class, make a little contact and then dash off to my next activity. (more…)

Our young people today are fearlessly and enthusiastically seeking alternative solutions to their concerns through yoga. The above comment is an example of their willingness to try something new and is outside of the options that are typically available to them.

So why are we seeing a rash of news stories about parents, religious communities or school boards that are trying to keep yoga out of churches and schools? Why are they equating the practice of yoga with religion? (more…)
