Magical Medical Tour: Quid quid latine dictum sit altum viditur (keep reading)

Glenn Wollman

Quid quid latine dictum sit altum viditur -> translated into english means “whatever is said in Latin seems profound.”

Why does a Latin phrase sound profound? What causes us to become attracted to certain things visually or aurally? What triggers us to spend money on items that may be harmful or, at least, not in our best interests? Even if you do not know, be assured that there are those who do know the answers to these and many more questions about why and how we can be enticed into procuring things. There are creative geniuses applying images and words in ways that manipulate our minds, enabling that “instant decision”. “I will buy this nutrition bar because it is fortified with natural products and the other bar doesn’t even have any anti-anti ingredient”.

In the last few weeks I have watched videos and read reports regarding fake blueberries in cereals, the danger of plastic bottles of water, the hazards of cow’s milk, organic arsenic in chicken, mercury in fish — and the beat goes on. I had to go to the store and check out the blueberry cereal myself. It was true, the cover had a beautiful picture of GIANT BLUEBERRIES. I could almost taste them. When I looked at the ingredients, there were NO BLUEBERRIES. So if you bought the box because of the cover and you did not read the label, then you should consider framing the box cover and putting it on your wall as a piece of art — because that is what appealed to you. The actual ingredients didn’t really matter. Caveat Emptor (let the buyer beware).

We are all concerned about the the future of health care. Whatever plan we end up with will not be as important as the health plan we design for ourselves. As a Medical Guide I emphasize exercise, stress and sleep management. Even more vital for health and well being is nutrition, including things that go in or on our bodies, eventually making their way to our cells. It is time to get serious and learn to read the labels. It took a great effort by many people to get a label with information on it. Take advantage. More important than reading the label is understanding the ingredients. This will assist in achieving proper nutrition, weight control and avoiding food allergies or intolerances. Every ingredient that is in something will be on or in you. Most healthy bodies can handle trace amounts of things. Unhealthy bodies may not fare as well. Also consider that over time, trace amounts may accumulate, becoming large amounts where even the healthy body might be harmed. It is time for us to take control. Ad vitam paramus – (We are preparing for life).

Here are three web sites that will take the “latin” out of the labels as you consider consumption:

1. How to use and understand the nutritional facts label

2. Six catches you need to know

3. How food manufacturers trick consumers with deceptive ingredients’ lists

Glenn, as usual another great article. One thing I have found that is just as important as the ingredients within the food, is the mindfulness with which we eat the food. Providing an appreciative and thankful mindset, allowing the time to appreciate the taste and texture and Spirit of the food, also aids in how we digest and utilize the energy brought forth from the food. Love your blogs! Keep em coming!

  3. I second Richard’s thoughts. We give thanks for the food long before it even shows up on the dinner table. It starts with a consciousness around shopping for the food. Finding and building relationships with farmers and vendors you can trust, blessing and energizing the food as you choose it, and of course all throughout the cooking and preparation stages.

    Greetings Richard,
Thank you for your insight as you take us from the “body” of food in to the “mind and Spirit” of eating.

    Greetings SEgovia,
Certainly food has importance when it comes to health but there are also social and Spiritual components. Thank you for reminding us not to take any of this for granted and to have gratitude for the entire realm including the sun, soil, rain and to those that produce food and make it possible for us to obtain it for health and enjoyment. We should all practice your practice.
