Neti Pot and Me

Francesca Silva

Neti-Pot-User.jpgWell, I did it.

It was my birthday recently and I decided to celebrate by trying out my Neti Pot for the first time – a fresh cleansing start to my personal year!

And guess what? It wasn’t even half as bad as I’d made it out to be. I mean – what was I fussing about?

Of course, in my usual obsessive manner, I did a couple of “dry runs,” leaning over the sink, tilting my head at the right angle, inserting the spout into my nostril, and breathing through my mouth.

Then I was ready. (I’m so melodramatic, aren’t I?!)

It took me a while to get the positioning of my head right and get used to inserting the Neti Pot spout into my nostril – for some reason, the children’s song “I’m a little teapot” kept resonating in my head! When I started pouring, I forgot to breathe through my mouth at first (which gave me an unpleasant drowning sensation), but after a while I got the hang of it and it ended up being really quite simple.

Honestly – what a fuss I made about nothing!

Apart from sneezing for about 15 minutes and spending the rest of the evening blowing my nose, I have to admit I didn’t feel any immediate results. When I woke up the next morning, however, I realized that I didn’t feel clogged up like I usually do and – even better – I didn’t have a headache!

Hmmmmm… maybe, just maybe, there’s something to this Neti Pot thing after all. (And yes, I can hear a chorus of voices saying “I told you so!”)

I’ve been using it for a few days now and have gone from reluctance to enthusiasm pretty quickly. So thanks to all of you who encouraged me – and gave me the necessary boot up the backside – to try my Neti Pot. Count me in with the rest of you who think Neti’s great – and let me know if anyone else needs convincing!
