Letting Go

Francesca Silva

Okay, I’ll admit it. I hold grudges. If I want to, I can cling on to a grudge like you wouldn’t believe – barnacles on rocks have nothing on me.

I know, I know – we can all get upset about things said or not said at any given time, but some people manage to shrug it off and forget about it. Me? Not so much. I mean, I remember something insignificant that my sister did to me when we were kids, for goodness sake, and I still feel that twinge of a grudge…

Unhealthy? Of course – but until recently I didn’t realize how much it has affected my emotional and physical health over the years.

That’s where Meditation comes in. Now that I’ve started meditating again, certain unpleasant and long-suppressed memories are surfacing. It’s funny but I don’t recall this happening when I first started meditating years ago, but I didn’t take it all that seriously either – it was more along the lines of “let’s just throw in a few minutes of meditation today” sort of thing.

These days, I choose to take my meditation far more seriously. I make sure that I meditate every morning – and that’s when all these memories start to surface. The funny thing is that they don’t make me feel bad or angry anymore. It’s as though I’m expelling all the grudges as I exhale…and when I’m through with my meditation, I feel wonderful – refreshed, renewed and invigorated.

I’m learning to let go – and it’s an amazing feeling.

  1. Wow, the way you described this made me think of a movie I just saw with my son, “The Last Air Bender”. At the end near the climax of the movie, the Avatar (the main character) must save everyone by overcoming his emotions (fear and anger) by allowing them to flow like water. It is only once he is able to fully experience his suppressed emotions that he is able to truly master and harness the power of ‘water bending’, thus creating a massive wall of water in defense against the onslaught of the fire nation and returning peace amongst the people of the Northern Water Tribe.

It’s the way you said that during your meditation, all the memories start to surface. Only by allowing these memories to flow and be released can we truly become free from them and move on with our lives. Of course this is easier said than done 😉

“Flowing like water”…that’s EXACTLY what it feels like, now that you mention it! I’m really enjoying my meditation and have found that it not only allows me to release all past frustrations but also enables me to mellow out more ~ to the delight of Hubby and Mumsie!

    Love the term “water bending”…
