Is All Music Spiritual?

John Sovec

Music NotesIs all music spiritual? The reason I ask this today is because I love to play all kinds of different music when I am practicing yoga – everything from Deva Premal to Madonna. I let each style inspire me with the musician’s unique energy. I have shared this love of music with others and most people I teach also enjoy it.

Occasionally, however, I will have a student question the appropriateness of “non spiritual” music in a yoga class. I always respond that, for me, it is about creating a joyful environment where we can freely express the unique physicality of our bodies. Music can inspire movement, and sometimes it allows us to step outside our serious selves and just let go.

So I suggest you put on your favorite song whether it is classical or punk; shake up your yoga practice. Let the music transport you outside your normal practice so that you can explore new ways of moving your body. Allow the music to enter your soul and open you to a whole new vocabulary of movement.
