Shooting Hoops through Yoga

Paloma Chavez

Althletic Yoga for BasketballKent Katich, the owner of All Sport Yoga, has been incorporating yoga into his coaching of professional athletes for the past 15 years. And now he has taken his work and experience of training NBA teams, golfers, and baseball players, and incorporated it into his DVD Yoga Hoops. This DVD provides players with a comprehensive “core conditioning workout” that utilizes yoga to stretch and lengthen muscles for better balance and strength. In addition, it teaches them how to use yoga to sharpen their mental focus and concentration.

When Kent Katich was asked if yoga can really make a difference in a professional athlete’s performance, he responded that it “builds stamina through breath control and teaches techniques for relaxing in tense moments.” He explains that, contrary to popular belief, many athletes are not as limber and agile as they would like to be, and his workouts therefore uniquely assist them to focus on building their flexibility.

From warriors to half-moons and downward facing dogs, the poses that Kent puts professional athletes through are giving them a new perspective on balance, breath, and true strength. These professionals are coming to the realization that yoga not only improves their physical balance and range of movement, but also gives them an edge in calming the mind and focusing on being the best at what they do.
