Yoga for Laughs
Since I had to return home before completing a full 10 days of Anusara thought I’d just complete my comments with some follow-up notes — about one of my favorite puzzles in yoga practice- the male authority body (as renown teacher “expert”) instructing female student bodies. (more…)

I’ve signed up for that ultimate marketing savvy yoga class offer -Bikram’s 10 classes for $10 for 10 days. In case you haven’t heard what Bikram yoga classes are about; room temperature is kept at 105 degrees and it’s all about the sweating.
Now I’m not a big fan (no pun intended!) of a lot of hot air (pun intended!). I can barely withstand a couple of minutes in a sauna cause it doesn’t really relax me when I feel like I can’t breathe! (more…)

It takes me a while to get the hang of it — being on vacation — but slowly I let go of my daily routine and “let the good times roll” (yes, I am in New Orleans!).
My yoga “routine” too.
Yes, that’s what I said. I’m not doing yoga this week because, well, I’m here to sit along the River and dance till my feet hurt and sample beignets and spicy collard greens. (more…)

A yoga practitioner living in India responded to my entry on The Cost of Doing Yoga with this price comparison:
“You could come to India. An unlimited-use monthly pass to a yoga center within a 15-minute walk from my house [in Chennai], with 2-3 open sessions each day to choose from, costs 500 rupees – about $11.00. “ (more…)

I’m an April baby. Coming to life with the first blasts of green windy spring days. Anyone who knows me would probably describe me as truly possessing the energy of this season: quick-sprouting, excited by the wind, forever hopeful of what’s being created! (more…)

During my travels in India I learned an important life lesson while riding buses and trains:
there’s always room for one more!
I’ve often repeated this idea while teaching near-capacity classes because it applies to the attitude and state of mind a yoga student cultivates that eventually becomes more important than learning which foot to place where in asana. Truth be told, conditions are rarely just right, usually you don’t have the time, money and space and other people seem to always get in your way, right?! (more…)

One of the rumors about yoga is that it creates a youthful body, hinting at longevity.
Don’t know about that-I’ll tell you when I get there but I was reflecting on the whole age thing this week because my beloved auntie celebrated her 96th birthday (her husband is a younger man at 95!). My sister Basia, who has an incredible blog, wrote a beautiful piece about them and how significant they’ve been in our lives. (See India Ink entry for January 9, 2007, it includes one of my poems) (more…)

A while ago I heard of a “Yoga and Chocolates” class (why didn’t I think of that!) and this week The New York Times does a piece about yoga and wine retreats! That’s right, contrary to what you think a yogi should or should not be “doing”- wine has been enjoyed by many a yogini or two!
Beyond the hilarity of the debate, the issue of alcohol (as well as chocolates, sex and a number of other things; sometimes all together too!) often divides a room of yoga teachers into those who believe that the two just don’t mix, and those who think it makes a great combination. The article reflects the sentiments in the yoga community which in turn reflect different approaches to deeper issue such as the role of stimulants, altered states, sexual pleasures, dancing, eating etc. (more…)

There is an Indic wisdom that goes:
“Where the hand goes, the glance follows,
Where the glances lead, the mind follows,
Where the mind goes, there the mood follows
Where the mood goes, there is “rasa” born.”
Rasa is the juice of life, the essence, that which moves us – to adore, to grieve, to love, to revolt, to embrace – to be moved because we recognize it as the actual passion of our wanting to experience life.
Today I was sitting on the top step leading to my apartment because the view of the trees is absolutely amazing from there. I often sit there when I’m having my breakfast or lunch because it’s truly the best seat in the house! (more…)

There have always existed differences amongst the various schools of yoga. In the order of the yoga poses, how quickly you move through them, if you rest in between or if you’re encouraged to use yoga props.
Yesterday, while taking one of my favorite yoga classes, I was told that my head placement in a headstand was wrong. I tried the suggested adjustment, but immediately felt pressure on my neck and knew it was wrong. But that’s the subject of another conversation. (more…)
