The Definition of Yoga

yoginimegan

If there was a person on earth who had never before encountered the wind, what words would you use to describe it? Could any terms fully explain what it feels like to stand atop a mountain while mighty gusts try to blow you off balance? Would words do justice to galloping through a field on your horse while the wind whipped at your torso? Or sticking your hand out the window of a traveling car to feel the incredible force pushing at your arm? (more…)

Why Go Down A Dead-end?

yoginimegan

Looking up at the steep hill, I saw the “dead end” sign. Well, I wondered, why should I work that hard to walk up a hill only to turn around and walk back down again?

Normally, I would not have wasted the effort. Today was different.

Given that I had just dropped my daughter off for a three-hour gymnastics practice and I had to wait for it to be finished before taking the hour’s drive home, there was time to kill. So I turned in the direction of the hill. (more…)

For the Woman Who Had No Support

yoginimegan

Yesterday I walked to Barre — a town about 10 miles from my house. I wore a bright pink shirt that read “for the woman who had no support.” The shirt’s message gave me a boost. It was the reason I had decided to take a sunny day and spend most of it walking to get no place in particular.

My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago. When Joan was in a Boston hospital getting chemotherapy, the woman who had no support inspired her. (more…)

800 Pounds of Bad Mood

yoginimegan

Rocky was in a snit, probably because the spring bugs had sprung. They buzzed across his ears and eyes without mercy. A teeny bug is not intimated by an 800-pound horse in a bad mood, but I am.

I was trying to do him a favor by taking him out of the paddock and into the field where the fresh green grass was sprouting, but the bugs followed us. As I held loosely on to the lead rope he stepped on it, effectively pinning his own head down to the ground. He immediately started complaining by pounding his other hoof into the earth. Still trying to help, I reached down to lift his leg to pull the rope free. He protested and ended up with the rope caught on his horseshoe. (more…)

Mom, Your Life is Boring

yoginimegan

My son Jonathan was home sick this week, so he got to hang out with me. He saw first-hand what I do during the day – doing the laundry, writing, recycling, returning books to the library, talking on conference calls, and working on the computer, among other things. By day three, he was well enough to go back to school, and sick and tired of my daily routine.

When I asked him what he thought of my activities, he looked at me sideways with his eyes slightly rolled up, as if disgusted. “Mom” he said, “you lead a very boring life.(more…)

Lotus in WaterIt’s easy to take mindless action, to keep moving the wheel forward. However, this tendency for motion serves us best when it is tempered with reflection. (more…)

Day 20: Actions Add to the Bottom Line

yoginimegan

LeapYesterday, you read about inquiry as a means of side-stepping those dastardly “to-do’s” that try and detour you from your main goal. There’s more to say about them… (more…)

Day 19: Question Obstacles

yoginimegan

WritingYesterday, I had a conversation with a yoga teacher who was having a problem making progress on her goal of getting a website. Every time she started to take a step, another step would arise that needed to be addressed. It was one step forward and two back. (more…)

Day 18: Do Not Force It

yoginimegan

World Wide Web KeysYesterday, I wrote about hyperlinking back to your site when you comment or post in the YogaHub blog to gain visibility with both real people and those invisible spiders. I realized afterwards that this could lead readers to try and force-fit a sentence to include a hyperlink into the writing, even when it doesn’t fit with the content. Don’t force it – it makes your writing stilted and leaves the impression that the only reason you posted was to plug your own agenda rather than participate in a community. (more…)
