Yoga as Integrative Health

Margaret Kruszewska

MS_integrative-health.JPGI see the term “integrative health” being used more and more. Public Broadcasting Television featured an excellent show on the subject entitled “New Medicine.” The idea is that everything in your life contributes to your wellness.

Medicine, as practiced in North America and Europe, is considered “allopathic” and treats the symptoms mainly through invasive surgery or pills. But many times the physician will not be aware of what you are going through – mentally, emotionally and spirituality – during a time of illness.

Integrative methods take into account everything: family memories of illess, your love relations, your belief systems, what you had for breakfast, how you see and move through the world. Developing an at-home yoga practice along with yoga classes is one way to cultivate this awareness of your whole self.
