Day 4: The "Hot" Body in Bikram Yoga

Margaret Kruszewska

MS_Bikram_day4.jpgThere is a precision to the Bikram postures that does not allow for any variations. Some of them surprise me like the emphasis on palms together, knees locked. I try to keep a smile on my face but the rigidness of it all snaps me into the postures as if I were in boot camp.

I notice that I’m not really feeling any joy during the whole class. I’m concerned about doing it right, I’m concerned about my heart racing, my skin hot and not sweating (a bad sign) and whether this really is good for the body.

I don’t experience grace or ease or an organic fluidity, something I thought I would after becoming familiar with the Bikram yoga routine. I do have moments of pushing into a firm strength and balance, like that of a soldier.I don’t end with that feeling of well-being I’ve experienced in just about every other yoga class I’ve attended regardless of who or how it was being taught. Although the body is hot, the spirit is strangely cold.

I do feel good making it through the class. I wonder if I’ve gained in flexibility when I’m not in a hyper-heated room.
