Day 7: Effects of Bikram Yoga (for Real)
There is an instant gratification that comes from a good sweat.
The cleansing effect on the skin and glandular system is apparent within a day or two. I was especially aware of how the lymphatic and adrenal glands are being activated through the Bikram posture sequence.
For example, almost every other arm pose is the long armed prayer pose over the head with locked elbows and pressing palms which would stimulate the lymph glands located around the armpits, neck and groin. These are important for filtering purposes and removing toxins. Adrenal glands serve multi-function (and interact with the pituitary and hypothalamus) including regulating metabolism and salt levels. The effect of “glistening” skin and a deep glandular cleansing, like the kind you would receive from a lymphatic massage, would be the reasons I would recommend the Bikram yoga postures. I’m still not convinced of many of the other claims such as weight loss, realignment and strength building. I do believe that a regular practice of yoga would create these positive effects anyway and so I’m not sure that it’s particular to Bikram’s “tourniquet” method. Or even if all that heat and straining is all that good for your circulation and heart.
