Award Winning Disabled Yoga Teacher

Paloma Chavez

“It took a devastating car accident, paralysis from the chest down, and dependence on a wheelchair before I truly realized the importance of my body.” -Matthew Sanford

After suffering a car accident when he was 13, which caused him to be paralyzed from the waist down, Matthew Sanford refused to allow his circumstances to limit his ability. With that strength of mind, he ultimately exhibited the vision and courage to recreate his life for the benefit of others.

Matthew was recognized for his work with the disabled by the Judd Jacobson Memorial Award, which provided him with the opportunity to expand his efforts. His pure determination and commitment to a physical and spiritual awakening has led him to become an inspiration to all people through his yoga practice. Recognized as a national teacher who is working with adaptive yoga for all levels of disability, he also provides a practical vision of attaining balance between mind and body

He has also invited us to understand his remarkable journey through his book Waking: A Memoir of Trauma and Transcendence. This inspirational book reveals the painful yet profound insights that he has gained through his efforts of discovering yoga as a way of spiritual transformation.
