Affirmation of Life

Francesca Silva

Well, that last year whipped by so quickly that it just about gave me whiplash!

It was a tough year. We had some personal health challenges and lost dear, close friends, both of whom were only in their late 40’s and early 50’s. One loss was quite unexpected and left us feeling bereft, reeling from the shock.

But life goes on. And what comes to mind is what my darling Mumsie said when her husband, my father, passed away. “I would never dishonour his memory by not living my life to the fullest, even though he’s no longer here to share it with me.” A wise woman, my mother.

My dear friend wanted so much to live. She loved life and fought death as hard as she could, but ultimately she accepted it with a grace and faith that was an inspiration to all of us who knew and loved her. She has left an irreplaceable void in our lives.

To honour her, I am choosing to live my life to its fullest and appreciate all the blessings and joy I’ve been gifted with. Life will undoubtedly throw more challenges my way but now, instead of getting caught up in the dangerous “why me” refrain, I’ll take the “why not me” approach, embrace the challenges and celebrate the joys – at least that’s what I’m going to try my best to do.

So Happy New Year, everyone – and may it be a wonderful one filled with joy, love and laughter.
