Life Group Family

John Sovec

Life Group LAI just returned from our most recent POZ Life Weekend, a workshop sponsored by The Life Group L.A., for those infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. I came away with an immense feeling of love, warmth, and compassion from working with my fellow volunteers and the many people who came to our weekend to learn how to live their lives with this challenging disease.

The workshop made me reflect on all the benefits that volunteering gives to me – especially the sense of family that is created when groups of people come together to make significant changes. Every few months, our group comes together from all over the city to create a place where people can learn, empower themselves, and connect with their spirit. Almost like a Thanksgiving gathering, we bring food, laughter, caring, and sharing to every location we work at. We gather together as a family of warm and loving people to make a sacred space.

How many of us have the opportunity to experience this in our daily lives? How many of us have this connection with our biological family? This special place is generated from a commitment that we make to each other and, as we travel through life together, we are given the opportunity to create families wherever we are. Family is not always the individuals we are related to by blood, but is often the people we trust to always be there for us and help provide us with the nurturing and care that we need.

I give thanks for each member of my healing family and invite you to look around and recognize the special families you have created, who support you each and every day.
