Autism and Yoga

Paloma Chavez

autisimyouth.jpgAccording to the Center for Disease Control, 1 in every 150 births are diagnosed with autism. This disease unbalances the neurological system and decreases the standard functioning of the brain.  Dr. Kari Kassir M.D. has researched the alternative methods of treatment and the effectiveness of yoga for autistic children.

In a two-part article in LAYoga (Nov/Jan) Dr. Kassir outlines the work of Louise Goldberg, yoga teacher who has used yoga postures as a form of relaxation for autistic children.  Shakta Kaur Khalsa, recognizes the power of using a mantra to increase language skills and develop focus.

Additional information includes the book Yoga for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, that offers step by step instructions and is written from personal experiences with their own son. The article also includes research from Dr. Jay Apte, Ayurveda  physician, and how Reiki a “vibrational healing” is used to reduce anxiety.
