Advice on the Neti Pot

Christina Souza Ma

Neti Pot Use Close UpFirst of all, I’d like to thank you all for the wonderful comments and encouragement you’ve given me on my challenging Neti Pot adventure. I wish I could have responded to everyone earlier, but life has been taking me on different paths and various other adventures.

Now that some semblance of order has returned to my life (ha – famous last words!), I’d like to find out if any of you may have encountered what I am currently experiencing.

During the time I was blogging about the Neti Pot, I’d become quite diligent with the cleansing and was feeling confident that I had finally overcome my fear of using it.

Then, since I was breathing very well, I took a month’s break from the cleansing ritual.

Well, recently my breathing started to feel a little strained again. I knew it was from all the dust caused by a lot of construction work being done around our home, so I figured I would give myself a good Neti Pot cleanse.

Yooowzah! Did it burn! I was so dismayed – I thought I had overcome this. What happened? It had only been a month since I last cleansed. How did my body revert back in such a short time?

I’ve been feeling so disheartened since then that I haven’t tried my Neti Pot again. But I will be traveling to Vancouver, Canada, this week and I know I’ll need to get some cleansing done, because my allergies always kick in when I am there – except for my last visit, when I had been cleansing regularly.

Maybe the intensity has returned because my mucous membranes have been so abused with pollutions and allergies all these years (although thankfully not from medication). I’d really like to understand why I’m going through the burning sensation again and what it will take to overcome the discomfort.

I’d appreciate any advice from those of you who may have encountered similar experiences. In the meantime, I’m back to struggling with my fear of the Neti Pot – but this time I’m determined to overcome it because I know how beneficial the results will be.

So, here goes (again)…

  1. It is possible that the stinging occurs because either the water is not the right temperature, too cold will sting or the amount of salt used is inappropriate. The temperature should feel comfortable when the water is put on the inside of the wrist. The amount of salt used should make the solution taste like tears. I hope that this helps, use of the neti pot should feel very comfortable and one should feel no sensation at all when doing the irrigation. I have found this to be wonderful for me. The information at http://nettipot.brighterplanet.org/ may be useful.

  2. I was hoping I would get advice from you on the neti-pot.

I admit, I don’t have one. In the shower I just let warm water pool in my palm. Then I learned to softly snort water up and then come out of my nose.

I am pretty comfortable in the water though – I did lots of swimming as a kid.

Hope to hear more on this to de-myst-ify it! Thanks,

    Aruna
