Yoga and Nutrition
One of the fundamental aims of yoga is to achieve natural physical and spiritual balance by controlling the fluctuating forces within ourselves. This mindset should extend to all facets of our lives, so it is not only important to practice yoga regularly but to follow a nutritious and healthy diet as well.
A health-conscious diet is designed to promote one's life force or prana. The basic theory is to eat small portions of high-quality food in order to maximize digestive potential and keep toxins under control.
Carbohydrates, for example, are a better source of energy than animal proteins or fats. Try using whole grains and certain high-carb vegetables, but stay away from simple carbs such as sugar.
Fruits and vegetables are an excellent source of essential vitamins and minerals, with green, leafy vegetables being especially beneficial. Fruits possess a high concentration of prana, making them especially desirable, but bear in mind that they also contain fructose, which should be consumed in moderation.
Fish is an excellent choice for a healthy diet as it contains an abundance of essential vitamins, oils, and minerals that are good for both the body and the mind.
Nutritional diets seek to reduce the amount of meat and poultry consumed since animal proteins tend to be high in harmful fats and cholesterol. However, meat and poultry are also good sources of protein so it isn't necessary to completely cut them from your diet. Consuming small portions of lean meat and the white meat from poultry, without the skin, can provide you with essential nutrients.

The fat and cholesterol content in diary products tend to be high, so try using fat-free versions of them and also make sure that there are no harmful additives in the products. Although it isn't necessary to totally avoid dairy products, remember to keep the portions small.
For maximum nutritional value, produce should be as fresh as possible, organic, or pesticide free. Fish, poultry and meats should be wild or free range and hormone-free as well. Many yoga practitioners like to eat as much of their food raw as possible since cooking tends to break down its beneficial elements.
Balancing your physical and spiritual practice of yoga with a proper diet is a discipline that will definitely result in a positive impact on your health and wellbeing.
