What's New in the World of Yoga:
Yoga is often challenging but sometimes, depending on different body types, it can be downright tortuous. A "well endowed" yoga student may find it really hard to lie flat on a yoga mat. A weightlifter with impressive biceps may find it frustrating that he is unable to fully cross his arm over his chest. And a young woman who is living with Multiple Sclerosis may not feel confident about her ability to balance on one foot.
We all know that old saying "Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes", but sometimes our uniqueness can keep us from trying new activities. The good news is that yoga instructors are becoming more aware of the need to adapt yoga to suit different body types. For individuals who are interested in trying yoga but who may be feeling a little self conscious about their body size, mobility or physical ability, here are some yoga resources that can help you.
Megan Garcia's DVD "Yoga: Just My Size" offers modifications for the plus-size yoga student. According to Megan, "My modifications were pretty simple: moving the flesh to allow a stretch, widening my stance for a forward bend." Megan explains that simple adjustments like these will allow plus-size students to maintain stability and proper alignment throughout
their poses.
