What's New in the World of Yoga:
Green – eco-friendly, eco-conscious, better for the environment. If you haven't heard about this, perhaps you're a little green on the green. But don't worry, everyone's talking about it! A local news station recently did a story on a new TV show called "Hollywood Green" that will highlight celebrities who are advocates for a greener environment. The Sundance Channel follows a family in England who uses a waterwheel to provide electricity. Other programming, blogs, papers, and books are also reporting on ways to become greener.
As yoginis or people who are interested in starting yoga, how can we do our part? The Green Yoga Association (GYA) has put together a helpful list of actions that yoga studios and students can easily incorporate into their daily practice. From using energy-saving light bulbs to buying non-toxic products, GYA also encourages the simple act of walking as a way to literally reduce your ecological footprint on the planet. Some studios are supplying public transportation information and installing bike racks for students as alternatives to driving their cars.
We could also rethink our yoga supplies and clothing. Have you tried wearing bamboo? Or perhaps resting your head on a buckwheat-filled pillow? How about doing a pose on natural rubber mats, like the ones offered in this week's newsletter? Taking one less car ride to the yoga studio or choosing sustainable materials for your gear – it all makes a difference.
