What's New in the World of Yoga:
As you can tell from the title of this newsletter, we're about to delve into the hot topic of yoga and religion.
Quite often, when conversing about the practice of yoga, the topic of religion comes up. "How can you practice your religion
and yoga at the same time?" is a common question. It's interesting how many people think along the lines of "yoga versus religion" and refuse to consider the practice of yoga because it appears to be in violation of their own religious practices. It's
possible that this is because yoga is often perceived as a religion in itself.
So is yoga in conflict with religion?
In a topic as controversial as this there are, of course, many different opinions. On the one hand, many individuals firmly
believe that the spiritual practices of yoga are in direct contravention of their own religious practices because yoga has its
roots in the Hindu religion. Followers of Hinduism believe in pantheism, which is the worship of several deities instead of one
Supreme Being. For Christians, these teachings are obviously in deep conflict with their belief in one true God.
On the other hand, there are individuals who strongly feel that people of any faith - Christians, Jews or Muslims - can practice
yoga without it being in conflict with their religion. Many of them resolve this conflict by practicing only the physical aspects of yoga, such as hatha yoga, which is considered to be the most physical in nature. However, some yoginis believe that both the physical and spiritual practices of yoga must be embraced in order to attain its full benefit.
Ultimately, the decision for a religious person to practice yoga is a deeply personal one. It is up to each individual to decide
whether or not they can reconcile the practice of yoga with the practice of their own beliefs.
We at YogaHub don't claim to be experts on this topic, by any means. Our aim is simply to generate a respectful dialog on this
thought-provoking topic.

I have to share with you my experience at Silverlake Yoga.
What a wonderful way to begin my physical practice again.
I chose a beginners' class with Jonathan Emerson, who is one of the owners of Silverlake Studio, which has been around for 14 years. That is a testament in itself, when a community studio is able to sustain its location and practitioners for so many years. Continue Reading...
Yoga and My Health by Francesca Silva
Last week, I had my annual check-up with my doctor. When I'd seen him approximately 15 months ago, he'd mentioned that my "bad" cholesterol was quite high - phooey.
My doc's great, though. He's not one to take the easy way out and throw a pill at his patients immediately. Instead, he suggested that I consider adding some flaxseed oil and fiber to my diet. Continue Reading...
