What's New in the World of Yoga:
Feeling lethargic? Can't seem to shake off the fatigue of not getting enough sleep at night?
For many active people, an occasional series of sleepless nights can be attributed to stress, changes in hormones, or even a recent shift in emotional health. However, if you find that sleeplessness is occurring more than usual, you may be experiencing insomnia.
When insomnia occurs, it is difficult to resist the urge to self-medicate with over-the-counter drugs in order to get back to sleep quickly. However, this "quick fix" method may not teach you how to relax your body and mind in order to ensure a restful sleep on a regular basis.
An alternate way of resolving insomnia is through natural methods such as yoga, which is a holistic way to bring balance back to your nightly sleep patterns. Leslie Peters, a certified intermediate Iyengar yoga teacher, suggests that incorporating a few specific yoga poses to your bedtime routine will offer you relief and provide a more serene sleep. She recommends poses such as "Standing Forward Bend", "Downward Facing Dog", "Seated Forward Bend", and "Supported Shoulder Stand", all of which can help calm nerves and relax a busy mind in preparation for a restful sleep.
Sat Bir Singh Khalsa, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, director of research for the Kundalini Research Institute and a neuroscientist for Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. As an expert in sleep disorders, he has been conducting studies on the effectiveness of yoga in resolving insomnia. In the upcoming "Yoga for Health" conference, Khalsa will discuss sleep disorders, review "effective behavioral treatments for insomnia including relaxation, yoga and meditation", and recommend yoga techniques that will help alleviate the problem of insomnia.
So instead of tossing and turning endlessly for one more night, why not use that time to do something beneficial for yourself - learn some yoga poses that will help you release tension and relax your mind and body to ensure a good night's sleep.
