What's New in the World of Yoga: At the Yoga Therapy Conference in Los Angeles, we had the opportunity to meet the author and yoga teacher Matthew Sanford. Having written about him and his work in a previous blog post, it was a treasured moment to be in his presence. Full of enthusiasm, compassion and humor, he read an excerpt from his book, telling us about the first moments in the hospital after the car accident that left him paralyzed. The audience of yoga professionals, students and medical practitioners were silent and focused on the intimate subtleties of a man triumphant and yet ordinary in his own eyes. Later that day, I watched him generously extend his teaching in a hallway to a woman needing advice about her injuries. Without hesitation, he made slight but significant adjustments to her posture, which she quickly understood and was thankful for. An effortless gesture with great impact. This month, we are happy to offer Matthew's profound and inspiring book to you. An autographed copy of Waking: A Memoir of Trauma and Transcendence, is available in our YogaHub Shop. Part of the proceeds from the sale of each book will go toward Matthew's non-profit organization, Mind-Body Solutions. Matthew's story is an extraordinary account of his personal journey to regain a life of balance and wholeness, and it will inspire readers as they learn of his struggles and triumphs. We encourage you to read it and share your thoughts with us by posting a review on our site. Background On Matthew Sanford: Matthew Sanford was paralyzed by a car accident that killed his father and sister when he was 13. Instead of succumbing to the tragic circumstances that life had dealt him, he learned about survival and how the mind-body integration could allow him to heal. In his search for ways to heal himself, he learned about yoga and over the years has developed a unique philosophy. As a recognized leader of adapted yoga, he has brought a new dialogue to the field of disability and rehabilitation. His non-profit organization, Mind-Body Solutions, seeks to define rehabilitation models and new approaches of total health living. His work has won the attention of Volvo for Life Awards, which recognizes everyday heroes across America.
