Question: I’m concerned about restless sleep after my yoga class. My class finishes at 9 pm and, even though I feel relaxed and tired, I have a disturbed night’s sleep. Although I manage to get to sleep, it is restless. I have lots of dreams – some vivid – and I wake frequently. Is there anything I can do before I go to bed? ~Lesley
Answer: Restless sleep is almost like getting no sleep at all. I can always tell when I haven’t slept well during the night because I just feel heavy all over. So here are some things to try. Make sure that you are winding down at the end of an evening class. I usually allow up to 15 minutes of Savasana at the end of my evening classes so that my students can release the heat of practice and move into a deeper sense of release. Forward folds, simple twists, and gentle breathing also assist in calming down the system. A brief meditation at bedtime might also help set the body mind and spirit for a more restful night. Letting go of the energies of the day can soften the mind and in turn release the body from any restlessness. You could also try drinking some Chamomile tea, which will help to calm and quiet the nervous system. |
