Question: I've been suffering from neck, shoulder pain for quite sometime. I have gone to the chiropractor but the moment i complete the sessions, this pain returns and it goes up to my head. I'm thinking of doing some yoga exercises to get relief from this. What is the most effective asanas that i should embark on and what are the precautions that I should take. Thanks. Answer: In approaching yoga as a therapeutic practice, it is most important to get a full examination from your regular healthcare provider to determine if there are any serious issues going on. Whatever the results of your exam, you want to make sure and work closely with your teacher and make them aware of the challenges you are facing.
Most commonly, neck pain is actually a result of shoulder tension and can be eased with proper shoulder alignment and opening. Make sure that your shoulders are moving slightly back and down the spine rather than rolling forward and inward, which is a common posture in our stressed out society. With this alignment in mind, most standing poses should be safe and effective.
It would be wise to stay away from inversions and backbends as they can easily put stress on the neck and spine if not correctly aligned. Find a good, gentle or therapeutic (viniyoga) class and let that be your introduction into the world of yoga. You may find that through the movement itself your neck issues may begin to lessen. |
