Question: As someone who has always enjoyed sports that involve a lot of physical activity, why is yoga beneficial to the body? What makes yoga so different from other “less strenuous” or “softer” movement and forms (i.e. tai chi or qigong)? Answer:
The thing that I find best about yoga is that although it is perceived as a soft movement activity, it takes a lot of focus and internal strength to make it through a yoga sequence. The strenuous aspect of yoga is found in the intensity we bring to it each time we practice. So if I am having a low energy day I can do a series and travel through it with gentle kindness. If I am feeling energized and ready to challenge myself, I can do the exact same sequence adding focus and intensity and receive an entirely different set of benefits.
Yoga is also great for bringing a lot of healing to the sports oriented body. It can assist in building long pliable muscles, keeping joints active and lubricated, as well as increase breath capacity. It can also increase focus and concentration, which will improve anybody’s game.
